Turbocycles, no plates and a vanishing act: Galactica 1980 passes a million
A three-day-old clip from the franchise's oddest chapter, two Colonial warriors evading California police, is carrying the official channel through its biggest week in a while.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 688,782 views a day, 10 times a normal day (65,422).
Invisible Jailbreak and Cylon Ambush in Space | Battlestar Galactica
What happens when two Colonial warriors take high-tech motorcycles onto a California highway without license plates? The police notice, naturally. Troy and Dillon lead the officers on a chase, slip behind a billboard and switch on an invisibility field, and the clip ends with two baffled cops arguing over where the bikes went.
That scene, "High-Speed Pursuit and Vanishing Act," comes from "The Super Scouts," the fourth episode of Galactica 1980. It went up on Monday and has already passed a million views. That is about as many as the whole channel gained over the past week, and on its busiest day the channel ran at roughly ten times its usual pace.
The official channel's about text is devoted to Ronald D. Moore's 2004 reimagining, yet its shelf covers all three eras. There is a Season 4 compilation of the later show's last stands, and a 1978 rescue in which Apollo blows the hull to vent a fire into space. Lately, though, it has been working through Galactica 1980, the short ABC follow-up created by Glen A. Larson. In it, Lorne Greene returned as Adama, Kent McCord played Troy, the grown-up Boxey, and Barry Van Dyke played Dillon.
The Galactica 1980 clips posted on the days that followed, a sabotaged Viper from "Spaceball" and an invisible jailbreak, are moving at the channel's ordinary speed. For now, the getaway behind the billboard is the one people are watching.
