From a Taco Bell to the Lakers: Cedric Ceballos sits down with Matt and Stak

Kobe Bryant's cousin brings stories of Charles Barkley, a Michael Jackson movie night and three heart attacks, and Larry Bird gets his own clip.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Cedric Ceballos wasn't supposed to make it, by his own telling. The episode's description says he barely played in high school, was discovered while working at a Taco Bell, and went from the 48th pick to leading the Lakers in scoring. He tells that road to Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson in an hour and twenty minutes of conversation. It runs through Compton, music with Warren G, the 1993 Finals with Phoenix and the ICU, and it ends on Kobe Bryant, his cousin, and the people the title says are rewriting his history.

It is the most watched of fifteen uploads, and the channel kept cutting it up. Larry Bird gets a short of his own for an unfriendly welcome to the league. Ceballos answers Stak's old claim, made live on ESPN, that he had cooked him. A third clip, about watching The Sandlot next to Michael Jackson and being offered popcorn, is only a day old and already moving fast. Earlier in the week, clips of Jason Sudeikis and Klay Thompson did their share.

The comment section reads like a reunion. Plenty of viewers admit they never knew Ced and Kobe were related. Others remember the scrappy mid-90s Lakers, Nick Van Exel and Anthony Peeler included, as the bridge between Magic Johnson and the Kobe-Shaq years.

The whole channel ran at nearly twice its usual daily views and added 10,000 subscribers. Among podcast channels of its size, only Stiff Socks and SmoshCast gained more views over the week. Dwarkesh Patel was busy too, while The Connect and All-In ran quieter than usual.

  • Before Kobe, heck even before Eddie Jones, Cedric Ceballos was that first Lakers star after the Magic era

  • Ceballos lead a Laker team that were so scrappy. They were never contenders but Ced, Threatt, Nick Van Exel, George Lynch and Peeler played hard. I appreciate how they were the bridge between the Magic Era to the Kobe/Shaq era.
