The room Kerry Washington wasn't in: Chris Rock's Hollywood warning
On a podcast run by two former NBA players, Washington explains why his advice about racism was about resilience, not acceptance.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 360,171 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (16,601).
Chris Rock gave Kerry Washington a reality check about Hollywood 👀
Kerry Washington was in tears. She had just run into racism on a movie set, and she called Chris Rock, her director and co-star on I Think I Love My Wife.
What he told her has stayed with her. "The most racist or sexist thing that happens to you in your career, you won't even know about it," she recalls him saying. "Because it will be a decision that's made in a room that you weren't even allowed in."
His second message was blunter. "Please don't ever let yourself be surprised by this stuff again." Washington is careful about what that meant. Rock was not telling her to put up with mistreatment. If she ended up crushed and in tears every time it happened, she says, she would not survive the journey. The lesson was resilience, because those barriers would keep coming back.
It is her answer to a host's question about what Black women in entertainment have to break through that others do not. In the comments, which arrived about two dozen times faster than on the channel's usual first day, many viewers dwell on the idea of decisions made in rooms they never see. Others add the hopeful flip side: people cheering for you whom you will never know about. A few note that Rock's advice gets around, recalling that Trevor Noah has told his own story of receiving it.
The clip is an unusual stop for ALL THE SMOKE, the podcast hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. Its other recent Shorts are welcome-to-the-league stories: Jamal Murray's rough rookie year, a young Chris Webber dunking on Charles Barkley, Gary Payton's trash talk leaving Kevin Garnett stunned. Each has drawn between ten and fifteen thousand views. Washington's Hollywood story passed 360,000 in its first day.

A Short that ran far ahead of the channel's usual start, on a podcast better known for basketball stories.
