A divorce in the delivery room: Nazeem Hussain and Urzila Carlson's Separated at Birth

The ABC's new comedy turns two paramedics into reluctant housemates, and its first trailer opened with about ten times the crowd the channel's Shorts usually draw.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 35,033 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (3,186).

Sameer is a paramedic, and he has just become a father. Moments later his wife asks for a divorce. That is where Separated at Birth begins, the new ABC comedy built around two performers its own description calls "comedy besties," Nazeem Hussain and Urzila Carlson.

The official trailer, a Short, went up on ABC Entertainment and finished its first day at about 35,000 views. A new Short there usually opens with a little over 3,000. Likes arrived at nearly four times the usual pace. The comment section stayed small, two comments in all, but one of them sums up the casting in two words: a dream team.

The premise piles chaos on chaos. Sameer is trying to co-parent and quiet his own fears about fatherhood. Then his "work wife" Donna, a fellow paramedic, moves in under his roof after her dream home renovation collapses. Hovering over both of them are two extended families the description calls feuding, opinionated and drama-loving.

The pairing has range behind it. Hussain made his name with the SBS sketch show Legally Brown. Carlson is a stand-up who has become a familiar face on panel shows on both sides of the Tasman. The video's tags fill in more of the comedy bench, with Sana Shaik, Melanie Bracewell, Luke McGregor, Ryan Shelton, Bron Lewis and Takashi Wakasugi. McGregor and Lewis were already busy on the channel this week, trying to teach school students about periods in a Class Clowns clip.

The show starts on Wednesday, November 11, at 8:30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
