Things we can learn from the video

  1. 2:40The replacement head unit works with Apple CarPlay and the BMW's steering-wheel controls.
  2. 4:42A Gauge.S display replaces a center air vent and connects to the car's CAN bus for vehicle information.
  3. 9:24Andy re-glues peeling A-pillar fabric before Alex routes wiring for a radar detector.
  4. 12:44Alex repairs the leaking autodimming rearview mirror by soldering in a replacement glass panel.
  5. 15:13Drilling and tapping the shifter extension allows Alex to raise the gear lever's position.
  6. 16:29The test drive checks the touchscreen, gauge display and revised shifter feel.

The vent is gone. In its place, Alex fits a digital gauge display that can show engine information inside Andy's BMW E46 M3. It's the most contested choice in Zip Tie Tuning's interior overhaul: more information for the driver, less ventilation from the dashboard.

We previously covered the car's new conveniences, but that compromise deserves a closer look. Alex connects the Gauge.S display to the car's CAN bus, the network through which its electronics exchange information. His enthusiasm supplies the answer to the video's title, "Why Can't Manufacturers Do This?": "manufacturers, how hard is it to do this? This is so much better than everything in new stuff."

Viewers are asking whether the extra readouts justify losing a working air vent. Others pick up on the decision to sacrifice the driver's vent rather than the passenger's. It's a specific wrinkle in the project: making an older performance car more useful can also mean taking something useful away.

The rest of the work is less divisive. An aftermarket touchscreen brings working Apple CarPlay and steering-wheel controls, Andy re-glues peeling pillar fabric, and Alex replaces the leaking autodimming mirror glass. The video also includes a Canadian Tire-sponsored segment.

The M3 already received a manual-transmission conversion in an earlier upload. Here, Alex raises the shift lever, too. On the test drive, Andy's verdict on the feel is immediate: "It feels like hundred times better!"

  • Sacrificing an HVAC vent for that gauge cluster is a horrible compromise.
