Michael Owen puts his teenage self "right up there"
Zac Djellab's question separates teenage brilliance from career greatness, and Owen makes a confident case for his younger self.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 73,152 views a day, 9.3 times a normal first day on this channel (7,862).
Where does Michael Owen rank himself amongst football teenagers? 👀 #football #premierleague
Ronaldo gets Owen's vote. After the Brazilian, though, Michael Owen sees himself near the top of football's greatest teenagers, even among names whose careers eventually surpassed his own.
Asked by Zac Djellab to place his younger self alongside Ronaldo Nazário, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, Owen answers: "I'd say R9 was probably the best." Then comes his own place: "After that, I'd be right up there, I would have thought."
The distinction matters to his answer. Owen acknowledges that the other stars reached higher peaks, but argues that teenage achievements are a different question. He points to his early numbers and accomplishments, contrasting them with players such as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who developed into their greatest selves later.
The Short has drawn roughly 53,000 views in 13 hours, an unusually fast start for Djellab's channel. Its comments are also already several times busier than a typical full first day.
Viewers are revisiting Owen's early Liverpool years and proposing names missing from the conversation, including Wayne Rooney, Nicolas Anelka and Pelé. One Everton supporter remembers how difficult it was to watch the teenage Liverpool striker from the other side of the local divide.
Djellab has also posted Owen discussing an almost-return to Liverpool and his choice of the greatest footballer ever. Here, the narrower question produces the more personal answer: not who had the greatest career, but how good Owen was before adulthood.
