Donald Trump spent several minutes of his Port Huron, Michigan, rally on Sunday explaining an earlier compliment. That compliment, which drew widespread coverage, was about the body of Ohio Senator Jon Husted.
The USA TODAY clip, built on Reuters footage and close to 40,000 views since its upload, opens with Trump recalling an Ohio rally where Husted joined him on stage. He describes being surprised by the Republican senator's muscular build and points to Husted's college football career. That missing context, the president argues, is why reporting on his remarks went wrong. According to the video's description, Trump said his comments had been made "in fun."
Then he goes further. "I've never done that with a man before, it's true," Trump says. "Off the record, women yes, men no, okay?" Seconds later he names Nicki Minaj, who was in the audience, and praises her backside in blunter language.
Minaj, 43, flew with Trump on Air Force One to the rally, USA TODAY reports. The Trinidadian rapper has spent the past year publicly praising the president, and the paper's description frames Sunday's remarks as Trump "returning the favor."
Trump brings her on stage near the end of the clip as "the Queen of Rap" who has "been with me from day one." Minaj hugs him and leads the crowd in chanting. "I am so honored to be working with this president," she says. "He represents resilience." She asks Michigan voters to support Republican candidates, among them Mike Rogers and Representative John James. As she leaves, Trump resumes speaking: "She gets it, smart."
The comment section filled up quickly, with about twice as many comments in twelve hours as the channel's regular videos usually gather in a full first day. Much of the discussion is about how far the rally strayed from policy.
