Mark Goldbridge takes off his glasses, leaves his desk and briefly walks out of shot. Reports that Manchester United will keep Michael Carrick in charge for the Roma and Aston Villa matches have brought him to another exasperated pause.
His hour-long response on The United Stand has drawn about 427,000 views since yesterday. This is independent fan commentary, with Goldbridge alone at his studio desk, fielding live messages and making an increasingly pointed distinction between admiring Carrick the player and backing Carrick the manager.
"Do I want Michael Carrick to get sacked? Yes," he says early on, while rejecting the suggestion that his criticism is personal.
The discussion follows United's defeat at Chelsea. Where Wayne Rooney's separate appearance explored possible replacements, as we reported here, this broadcast concentrates on why the club would persist with Carrick. Goldbridge argues that his treatment differs from the scrutiny Ruben Amorim received, and that the board is allowing affection for a former player to soften demands for results.
He brings up the league table, describes feeling numb while watching United concede, and criticises what he sees as a reactive, counter-attacking approach without a longer-term identity. Brighton supplies his counterexample: a club whose structure and recruitment, he argues, make its football coherent.
Nor would a win over Aston Villa settle the question for him. "The decision to sack somebody shouldn't be based on one result," he says.
Late in the broadcast, his argument reaches beyond the dugout. Goldbridge contends that the Glazers and INEOS benefit from Carrick's standing with supporters: "What they see there is a shield, and that shield is Michael Carrick."
