Robert Lucas puts marshmallow cobwebs over black chocolate ganache
The Sweet Impact baker calls his cake easy, but viewers have questions about all those carefully placed M&Ms.
Why this story? The video is running at 1,997,924 views a day, 8.4 times its usual pace (239,160).
Black frosting is not that bad
Robert Lucas announces an easy Halloween cake, then covers its bottom tier with individually placed black and orange M&Ms. His definition of easy is getting almost as much attention as the decoration.
The Sweet Impact upload, "Black frosting is not that bad", has added roughly two million views in a day, more than eight times its usual daily pace. Posted three days ago, it turns a familiar objection to dark cake icing into a decorating demonstration with a small but important distinction.
"This is chocolate ganache, not frosting, so it shouldn't taste bitter," Lucas explains as he covers the top tier in black. Below it sits an orange tier, which he smooths before beginning the patient work of arranging candy into a chevron pattern around the entire cake.
That candy placement is the subject of the most-liked comment, while other viewers joke about how much work Lucas is willing to classify as easy. The marshmallow technique is another talking point: wearing gloves, he pulls melted marshmallows apart and stretches the strands around the black tier to make cobwebs. One viewer says they want to borrow that idea for a work celebration.
Lucas stacks the tiers, pipes a black border between them and adds Halloween Oreos on top. White frosting dollops and black sprinkles finish a cake whose cobwebs are deliberately messy, but whose candy rows require considerably more order.
