Four rate rises in 2026, and Sunrise counts the cost in mortgage stress
The breakfast show's segment says 39 per cent of borrowers are struggling with repayments, and a sister piece looks at who comes out ahead.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Mortgage stress grips Australian families amid rate rises | Sunrise
Mortgages keep pulling the biggest crowd on Sunrise. "Mortgage stress grips Australian families amid rate rises" went up on Wednesday and passed 28,000 views in a little over a day, comfortably the busiest of the fifteen uploads Seven's breakfast show posted in seven days. Its description lays out the squeeze plainly: four interest rate rises in 2026, and 39 per cent of borrowers struggling to meet their repayments.
The same morning brought a companion piece, "Interest rates create stark divide in Australian economy," on the winners and losers of higher rates, and it ranked second. Money has been the channel's steadiest subject for weeks now, from Jim Chalmers's savings hunt to this.
The rest of the shelf wandered further. A study of 78 supermarket fruit and vegetable samples found PFAS forever chemicals in 44 per cent of them, and one strawberry punnet carried fungicide at ten times the legal limit. Kmart pulled smart glasses after a government look at their security. Labor MPs split over the tax office's ban on credit card payments, with Andrew Charlton for it and Clare O'Neil uneasy. And across the Tasman, a 25-year-old undecided voter from Auckland stole a live New Zealand debate with her face alone.
Overall the channel ran close to its usual pace, with a little over a million views across the week and the subscriber count holding still. Among the talk and entertainment channels nearest its size, Would I Lie To You? and LADbible Entertainment had the very big weeks, while Sunrise sat right in the middle of the group.
