Seven decades of point-and-shoots open Speeed's 'Then vs Now'
From a 1960s Kodak Instamatic to a Fujifilm X100VI, with an iPhone 6 in the mix, every camera shot the same film side by side.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Testing The Best-Selling Cameras From Every Decade
Which decade made the best point-and-shoot camera? Speeed's one upload of the week sets out to answer that, and it passed a million views within about four days. "Testing The Best-Selling Cameras From Every Decade" lines up the top seller from each era, starting with the Kodak Instamatic 100 and moving through a Canon Autoboy and an Olympus Stylus Epic to today's Fujifilm X100VI. All of them were loaded with the same film, and the iPhone 6 joins in, billed as the most popular point-and-shoot of all time. It ends with a blind photo test.
It is also the first episode of a new series called Then vs Now, and the description asks viewers what the next one should tackle.
The older videos keep turning too. "Plants for Boys," a beginner's guide to keeping houseplants alive, is past two million views at under two weeks old. "Vinyl vs CD vs Spotify" is nearly three months old and still drawing a steady stream. Maybe the physical-media crowd found the cameras from there? The channel as a whole is running a bit above its usual daily pace.
Among the motoring channels of similar size, Speeed sits fourth by subscribers, a fitting spot for a team that grew out of Donut Media. Matthew Parker is having the big week in that group, well above his own already large norm.
