Passenger footage captures wreckage beside Spain's high-speed rail line
Sky News' early crash report drew an unusually large audience, while its later coverage raised the death toll to at least 68.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 166,816 views a day, 10 times a normal first day on this channel (16,078).
Dozens die in high-speed train crash in Spain
Passengers filmed the wreckage. Through a carriage window, Sky News' report shows derailed train cars and smoking debris along the embankment after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain.
The crash happened between Los Yébenes and Urda in Toledo province, on the Madrid-Seville route. In the early broadcast, the presenter cites Spanish media reporting that the trains were traveling in the same direction and one struck the rear of the other.
That initial report has reached nearly 150,000 views in its opening hours, far beyond the usual first-day audience for a Sky News Short. Its account has since been overtaken by a higher death toll: the channel's later reporting puts the number killed at at least 68.
In "Everything we know about the Spain train crash," correspondent John Sparks reports from the scene. That follow-up says the rear-end collision happened despite a red signal. The early Short closes with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressing shock and condolences, and saying he remains in contact with the transport minister.
Spain’s prime minister since 2018 and leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).
