Google's cloud gains can't offset search weakness, Gil Luria says
Prof G Markets' fast-starting earnings clip turns on a familiar habit: whether people still Google their questions or take them to ChatGPT.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 94,370 views a day, 6.6 times a normal first day on this channel (14,230).
Google just lost $300B
Ed Elson hesitates over whether Google's after-hours stock decline deserves the word "tanks." Gil Luria doesn't: more than $300 billion in lost market value settles that question for him.
But the more interesting distinction in Prof G Markets' Short, "Google just lost $300B," is between two parts of the same company. Google Cloud delivered strong revenue growth. Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson, says that wasn't the problem: "If that's all they reported, the stock would be up."
Instead, he points to weakness in search and core advertising. His explanation connects the earnings reaction to an everyday choice about where people ask questions: "If people stop Googling and start GPTing, that means less ad sales."
That is Luria's central concern, not simply whether Google can build an AI business, but whether alternatives erode the search activity that supports its advertising revenue.
The clip reached roughly 58,000 views in ten hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for a Short. Another unusually fast-starting upload tackles Microsoft's staff buyout offer, with Elson interpreting it as a structural consequence of AI rather than simply a correction to pandemic hiring.
Both subjects feature in the longer episode "Microsoft Rises, Google Tanks: Why Investors Are Polarized On Big Tech," where Elson and Luria unpack the contrasting earnings reactions.
