A "Kennedy Center Demolished" rendering meets a 30-day court rule
Julia Jacobs explains why bulldozers would face a judge, a founding charter and a proposed Senate bill, and the comments arrived more than six times faster than usual.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 139,876 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (11,435).
Can Trump Demolish the Kennedy Center?
The image that starts it all was taken at Joint Base Andrews in September: President Trump aboard Air Force One, looking at a rendering labeled "Kennedy Center Demolished." From there, Times culture reporter Julia Jacobs asks the question in the video's title in plain terms: "Under the law, can President Trump actually send out bulldozers tomorrow to demolish the Kennedy Center?"
Her answer takes under three minutes and moves quickly. She recaps the December 2025 renaming that added Trump's name to the building, followed by artist boycotts and falling attendance, and the administration's argument that the center is dilapidated and structurally unsound. Protest signs reading "HANDS OFF THE ARTS" pass on screen, along with archival clips of the New York City Ballet, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and Beyoncé at the Kennedy Center Honors.
Then come the hurdles. A federal judge has ordered that the center go to court 30 days before any proposed demolition, oversight that Jacobs links to the earlier demolition of the White House East Wing. The building's founding charter is another obstacle: "It says that the center must be maintained as a living memorial to President Kennedy," she notes, and legal experts told her a full teardown "would be extremely difficult." The video closes on a Senate bill that would prohibit the demolition of presidential memorials.
The Short passed 100,000 views in its first 13 hours, and its comment section filled faster than the channel's Shorts usually do in a full day. Most of the talk is about whether legal limits would matter at all, and several viewers bring up the East Wing.
It led a busy Saturday of Shorts. Mujib Mashal's reporting from New Delhi's protests over voter-roll cuts also drew an unusually large audience, as did Arfa Momin's look at how college choice shapes earnings and Vanessa Friedman spotting the bra top as the trend to watch at Miu Miu in Paris.
