16-month-old hospitalized after coyote attack
Neighbors had been raising concerns about coyotes long before the attack on a child in Atwater Village, NBC4 reporter Keenan Willard reports. His segment puts those earlier warnings at the center of a question for local authorities: what action followed them?
The NBCLA upload drew about 74,000 views in its first 21 hours, far beyond the station's usual start for a regular video. But the substance is in the correspondence Willard brings into the report.
An email shown on screen warned L.A. Animal Services about an earlier incident involving children on scooters. Willard also reports that residents had contacted city and state officials for months about coyote feeding in the neighborhood.
Rebecca Dmytryk of Humane Wildlife Control Inc. questions why enforcement against intentional feeding had not followed. Resident Ken Zavayna describes frequent sightings and the vigilance required when walking his dog.
Willard reports that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded after the attack and that an animal was euthanized for DNA testing. At the close of the broadcast, NBC4 was still awaiting responses to its requests for comment from city animal services and state wildlife officials.
