NBCLA's Hetty Chang reported from a roadblock at Portico del Norte as heavy smoke filled the area and deputies went door to door ordering residents to evacuate.
The station's Friday afternoon broadcast followed the Norte Fire near homes in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Orange County Fire Authority Captain Greg Barta confirmed evacuation zones in both communities while describing the conditions facing crews. "Our biggest challenge right now is obviously the wind, and then the dry vegetation," he said.
The aerial pictures showed helicopters dropping water over brush near homes. Meteorologist Shanna Mendiola explained why the terrain added to the danger: steep slopes help flames spread uphill, while dry, shifting Santa Ana winds can accelerate the fire. The broadcast also reported early dismissals at several Capistrano Unified schools.
The report drew about 20,000 views in seven hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for regular videos.
NBCLA's subsequent coverage moved into the affected neighborhoods. Christian Cazares reported from a San Juan Capistrano street where destroyed homes stood close to others that had been spared, showing the sharply uneven damage left by the fire.
