Katie Zacharia's White House stint comes in shorter than Scaramucci's 11 days
NBCLA packs the rise and exit of the press secretary into under a minute, from a 14-minute first briefing to questions about her law credentials.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 884,401 views a day, 155 times a normal first day on this channel (5,718).
Katie Zacharia out as White House press secretary after five days
Posted ten hours earlier, NBCLA's Short on Katie Zacharia had already passed half a million views. That is a very large opening for a station whose Shorts usually draw a few thousand viewers in a full first day.
The report moves quickly, much like the job it describes. "Katie Zacharia's White House job lasted less than a week," the presenter begins, and then walks through the sequence. Her first briefing ran under 15 minutes and left few questions answered. She drew scrutiny for her replies about U.S. intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Then came questions about her legal background. "She later acknowledged she had not passed the bar exam, despite having represented herself as a lawyer," the presenter says.
The Short also includes President Trump's response. He said he would let Zacharia decide whether to stay and that the media had treated her harshly. It recalls her earlier work at Trump Media & Technology Group and notes that she had taken over from Karoline Leavitt.
The closing line provides the historical yardstick. Her five days fell short of Anthony Scaramucci's 11 in 2017, although Scaramucci was communications director rather than press secretary.
The comments came in far faster than usual. Within hours there were hundreds, on a channel where a Short typically collects about a dozen in its first day. Much of the discussion asks how a press secretary's background went unchecked when reporters were certain to examine it. Several viewers point out that the Monday was a holiday, which by their count leaves four working days.
The national story sat beside a busy local day for the Los Angeles station. Its live coverage of the Norte Fire in Orange County, along with reports on evacuation orders and damaged homes, also drew far more viewers than usual for its regular videos.
