Video taking off 30x its usual first day

A podium slip and a deferred answer frame ITV's Zacharia exit clip

The minute-long Short moves from her first briefing on October 13 to Donald Trump explaining what he told her three days later.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 220,354 views a day, 30 times a normal first day on this channel (7,264).

Katie Zacharia's time as White House press secretary fits into less than a minute of footage, and ITV News uses most of it on her first and only briefing.

The Short opens on October 13. Zacharia takes the podium and tells reporters, "I am so honoured to work for President Trump and the American people as the new White House press secretary." Moments later comes a slip: "So my president. Excuse me, my husband," she says, and laughs it off. A reporter then asks whether the US has stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. "I'll have to get back to you on that," she replies. The clip also includes an announcement about the US Navy's submarine repair center in Cleveland, Ohio.

The clip then cuts to October 16 and to Trump, speaking to reporters outdoors. He says he advised her to step back for the sake of her family life: "I said to her, honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider." ITV's description adds her farewell post, in which she called working for him an honor.

The Short passed 190,000 views within 17 hours, a pace this channel's Shorts rarely reach. The comments came in about five times faster than on a usual first day, and much of the talk measures the five days against other brief tenures, with Liz Truss and Anthony Scaramucci both getting a mention.

Ukraine also runs through the channel's other busy Short of the day: Trump putting a new package of Russia sanctions on hold, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy called "unfortunate." Closer to home, ITV's video of rival leaders reacting to its undercover Reform UK investigation is drawing an unusually large number of comments ahead of the full documentary's broadcast on ITV1.
