Kurt Busch's "shrub" story opens NASCAR's tribute to Kyle Busch
Joe Gibbs, Christopher Bell and family members join the Charlotte ceremony, and the comments keep returning to Brexton Busch's closing burnout.
Why this story? The video drew 508 comments in its first day, 5.5 times a normal first day on this channel (93).
Kyle Busch Celebration of Life | Full Ceremony
Kurt Busch's account of the family nicknames sets the tone early in NASCAR's full broadcast of the Kyle Busch Celebration of Life, held trackside at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Their father was the tree, Kurt was the bush, "and Kyle was the shrub," he told the crowd. He also remembered hearing early on how good his younger brother would be: "You think I'm good, you just wait till Kyle gets here."
Jamie Little introduces the ceremony and Mike Joy hosts it. Nick Terry of Motor Racing Outreach gives the invocation. Kyle's wife Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix, and his parents Tom and Gaye are in the audience.
A montage marks his 15 seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing: 56 wins and two championships. Gibbs then takes the stage to describe both sides of the driver he knew, the fierce temper and the comic who joined in the team's holiday skits. He recalls one blunt verdict from Busch: "He pointed to me, and he said, 'Your cars suck.'"
Three drivers from Kyle Busch Motorsports follow: Christopher Bell, Noah Gragson and Daniel Suárez. "There's not been a person in the industry that has had a bigger impact on my career than Kyle," Bell says.
The broadcast's audience in its first day was in line with the channel's usual. The conversation was not. Comments arrived more than five times faster than on a typical first day. Many viewers write about the ending, when Brexton Busch did a burnout in a Cup car. Others share their own memories of watching Kyle race and win in person.
NASCAR also posted that burnout on its own as a short clip, and it has already drawn more views than the full ceremony.

The numbers
The full ceremony drew an ordinary first-day audience for the channel, but a far busier comment section than usual.
