"The only time that we lose is when we quit," Dolores Huerta says in an archival interview replayed by Lawrence O'Donnell. Her words open a segment that moves from a remembrance of grassroots organizing to the closing arguments of an election campaign.
O'Donnell reports that Huerta died that morning in Bakersfield, California, at 96. He recalls their last conversation and revisits footage of her beside Robert F. Kennedy on the night of the 1968 California primary.
Huerta helped found the organization that became the United Farm Workers, alongside Cesar Chavez and Gilbert Padilla. Her work organizing boycotts and negotiating with grape growers gives context to the persistence O'Donnell highlights in her interviews.
He also reads Barack Obama's written tribute, beginning: "Dolores Huerta was a hero of mine."
The segment then follows Obama to Atlanta, where he campaigns for Senator Jon Ossoff. It revisits the restaurant dispute covered earlier, but O'Donnell broadens his argument: he says Democrats are making Trump's competence itself a campaign issue. A separate clip shows Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed delivering a blunt criticism of Trump on Hasan Minhaj's show.
The upload drew about 543,000 views since yesterday. Beyond its campaign-focused title, its opening minutes preserve Huerta's own account of what keeps an organizing movement going.
