Mel Robbins marked her 58th birthday by sharing a video she could easily have kept private. "Hey, it's your friend Mel. And this week I turned 58," she says, and then hands the screen to a younger version of herself.
That archival clip was filmed on her 52nd birthday. "I did not wake up feeling excited. I woke up feeling lost," she tells the camera. Her daytime talk show, The Mel Robbins Show, had been canceled after a single season. She and her husband had sold the house outside Boston where they lived for 26 years and raised their kids, and moved to a small town in southern Vermont where she had no friends nearby. She describes feeling "stuck in between two lives."
Back in the present, she points out what did not exist yet: no podcast, no Let Them Theory. In the description she notes that most people know her for what she built in her late fifties. The closing line is aimed squarely at the viewer: change, she says, is proof "that you are never too late, or too old, or too tired." Then she blows a kiss to the camera.
In eight hours the Short reached about 41,000 views, close to three times what her Shorts usually gather in a whole first day. The comment section moved faster still, at roughly ten times its usual pace. Birthday wishes fill much of it, but many viewers also describe being in that between-lives place right now. One is about to turn 52 herself. Another writes about starting over after losing a husband.
