McKallaster recasts Tommy Gemmell's kick as a "traditional dance"
His comic commentary on Scotland's 1969 meeting with West Germany is drawing fresh attention alongside another archive clip featuring Graeme Souness.
Why this story? The video is running at 36,090 views a day, 12 times its usual pace (2,976).
Tommy Gemmell Kicks Helmut Haller Up The Jacksie. West Germany v Scotland 1969 Allaster McKallaster
Even the pitchside coat becomes part of the joke. As a staff member approaches Helmut Haller, McKallaster interrupts his account of a decidedly unfriendly football exchange to question the wardrobe choice: "He's not Liberace!"
The black-and-white footage is real, but this is a comedy voiceover, not the original match commentary. Posted in September, the clip added roughly 36,000 views in a day, about twelve times its usual daily pace.
It begins with Haller tackling Tommy Gemmell during West Germany's meeting with Scotland in 1969. Gemmell responds with a kick from behind, Haller goes down, and McKallaster supplies the sort of defense that gives his "unbiased" Scottish commentary its name: "That's just a traditional dance in Scotland." Replays offer little help to that argument. Gemmell is sent off and heads toward the dugout.
The comments extend the joke into modern officiating, with one viewer suggesting VAR would somehow find the evidence inconclusive. Another remembers watching the match on television and the incident staying with them.
Gemmell isn't the only archive subject drawing attention on the channel. McKallaster's commentary on Everton against Liverpool in 1981, featuring Graeme Souness tackles, is also gaining views at around ten times its usual daily pace. Both September uploads put uncompromising old football footage beneath a very different soundtrack.
