Amazon shares were sliding in after-hours trading when Brent Thill offered a distinction that investors might not find comforting: the results weren't terrible, but they weren't what bullish shareholders wanted.

Speaking on Bloomberg The Close, the Jefferies software and internet analyst pointed to a mixed report. Overall revenue met expectations, cloud revenue slightly exceeded them, and operating income came in ahead. Advertising, however, missed.

"This is not what the bulls were hoping for. It's not terrible, make no mistake, and Amazon stock is really cheap," Thill said.

The interview, titled "No One Wanted These Amazon Earnings, Thill Says," drew roughly 167,000 views in seven hours, already far beyond Bloomberg Television's usual first-day audience for regular videos.

Behind Thill's assessment is a practical question about the AI build-out: signing cloud contracts is one thing; having the capacity to serve those customers and collect revenue is another. He questions why Amazon's large backlog isn't translating into faster growth, while pointing to supply constraints and delays in building data centers across the industry.

Amazon also has a balancing act that a pure software business doesn't: its higher-margin cloud operation must help offset the thinner margins of retail.

A separate Bloomberg segment, "Breaking Down Amazon's Third-Quarter Earnings," also drew an unusually large audience. Analysts Anurag Rana and Poonam Goyal examine spending on property and equipment that exceeded expectations as Amazon builds capacity for AI services. Thill's interview puts the investor question plainly: how long will that spending take to produce the growth shareholders expect?

  • The market seems to be questioning if massive investment can generate equally massive income . And another question is can this massive income be generated on time. Probably not but only time will tell .
