Erie police chief answers search-warrant questions after shooting that killed nine
LiveNOW from FOX carried the full press conference, where Rick Lorah, the district attorney and the mayor addressed the families, the timeline and the rumors.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,175,917 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (101,141).
9 killed in mass shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania
Nine people died in Erie. Eight were victims and the ninth was the gunman. Police Chief Rick Lorah told reporters that eight of them were members of one family, that one victim was eight months pregnant, and that two young children were found on the first floor of the house on Perry Street.
The press conference on LiveNOW from FOX lays out how Friday afternoon unfolded. "Our Erie Police Department patrol division responded to a ShotSpotter alert," Lorah said. Officers found two women shot outside the home. A standoff and a tactical entry followed, and inside they found six more victims and the gunman, who had died of an apparent self-inflicted wound. Investigators believe everyone had died before officers arrived, and Lorah said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
One question dominates the comments: why police would have waited for a search warrant with two victims outside. Lorah addresses it directly in the video. "The search warrant had nothing to do with the operation," he said, explaining the tactical protocols and the absence of any sound or movement from inside the house. He also described doorbell camera footage from a neighbor that recorded the two women before they were shot.
District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz asked the public not to spread speculation. "We're not going to compromise the integrity of this investigation by rushing to conclusions," she said. Mayor Daria Devlin, who grew up on Erie's east side, shared crisis counseling numbers for the community.
The report passed 900,000 views within seven hours, and in that time it already had more than fourteen times the comments a regular LiveNOW video usually collects in a full first day. Many of them turn to the officers and first responders who entered the house.
The channel's brief update on Christa Pike, returned to prison after surviving Tennessee's attempt to execute her, also drew far more viewers than usual.
