Sierra's unlikely graphics card gets a second look on LGR
Clint Basinger's retrospective unboxes the Screamin' 3D and tests its mid-'90s promises against games from Quake to Tomb Raider.

Sierra Screamin' 3D Graphics Accelerator from 1996
The hardware has homework left. LGR posted nothing new, but its retrospective on Sierra's Screamin' 3D graphics card is drawing around 41,000 views a day, by far the strongest momentum among its active uploads.
Sierra is a name many PC players associate with adventure games, not expansion cards. That makes "Sierra Screamin' 3D Graphics Accelerator from 1996" a particularly fitting Clint Basinger subject: a familiar company, an unfamiliar object, and plenty of compatibility questions. His description identifies it as Sierra On-Line's only graphics card, built around Rendition's Vérité V1000. He also entertains its claim to being an early GPU, while acknowledging that the definition matters.
The retrospective goes beyond the box and specifications into installation and games, including IndyCar Racing II, VQuake and Tomb Raider, before reaching the less glamorous business of technical support and limited game support. It has passed 1.5 million views.
Elsewhere in the catalog, "The Nintendo 64 Thirty Years Later! An LGR Retrospective" pairs a boxed console with a vintage CRT and that unmistakable three-pronged controller. A Hewlett-Packard Pavilion restoration supplies a more domestic slice of computing nostalgia: cleaning, spare parts and Windows 98 testing.
LGR added just over a million views across the week while its subscriber count stayed unchanged. Daily viewing is currently below its usual level. Nearby tech channels had varied weeks: Hardware Canucks gained subscribers on a slightly smaller weekly view total, while TechLinked's subscriber count, like LGR's, held steady. For LGR, the most active subject remains that odd little detour into Sierra's hardware ambitions.
