"Humiliation, always," Mary Trump says of her grandfather, Fred Trump Sr. "Humiliation for my grandfather was one of his greatest joys and his greatest weapons." Half an hour later in the same conversation, the word comes back, this time aimed at Europe.
The clinical psychologist, whose 2020 book Too Much and Never Enough made her the family's best-known critic, opens by admitting she is "sick to death" of talking about Donald Trump. She keeps going because, she says, his influence has not gone away. Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart start with her childhood in Queens, where her grandfather was already famous, and with her father, Fred Jr. She describes a household where empathy counted as weakness and the sons were expected to be "killers." Donald, she says, learned one lesson: don't be anything like Freddy. She also recounts how her side of the family was cut out of an estate she puts at about a billion dollars.
Stewart asks about the film The Apprentice, and she rejects its picture of a young, unsure Donald. "No, that was not at all my experience of him."
The Putin question of the title arrives late. Around the 35-minute mark she argues that Trump's aim with Ukraine is not to make Europe pay more but to watch its allies fail and be humiliated. She says he has admired Vladimir Putin since the 1980s, out of envy for leaders who rule without democratic checks, and that he would not care if NATO were dismantled.
The interview passed roughly 189,000 views within its first 11 hours, and its comment section had already outpaced the channel's usual full first day. Viewers keep coming back to her calm under questioning and to the timing ahead of the midterms. Trump's circle is familiar ground here: the channel's most watched video is still its interview with Michael Wolff. A host-read ad for the trading platform IG runs near the start.
