- 12:43Under the hinge shields he finds sand and debris, and questions the advertised dust rating.
Now for the autopsy. Two days after "iPhone Duo Durability: Destroyed" became one of his most watched uploads of the year, Zack Nelson has taken Apple's first folding iPhone apart to find out why its screens are failing.
He opens with damaged displays and the reports of green lines appearing on their own. The video's description goes further, saying Apple has confirmed that some Duos crack in the same spot because of a hinge defect. Nelson's job is to show where that spot is. More than a million people have watched him do it, in only about five hours online.
Getting there takes razor tools, isopropyl alcohol and no thought of putting the phone back together. Once the flexible display comes off, dust is already packed around the hinge. Peeling the screen apart shows how little stands between a fingertip and the electronics: a support mesh, ultra-thin glass and the AMOLED panel itself.
The culprit, by his diagnosis, is a central hinge component he christens "the pixel pincher 9000." Later, with the hinge's protective shields off, he finds sand and debris underneath, and says the dust resistance Apple advertises is "a bit misleading." His verdict for owners worried they are using the phone wrongly: "No, you're not folding it wrong, Apple built it wrong."
There is quieter engineering in between. Nelson frees the dual-cell battery with nothing more than a 9V battery, which releases the adhesive electrically instead of needing the usual prying. The final minutes show a working Duo in a dbrand Grip Case, the case the description promotes.
In the comments, viewers keep coming back to the sand and the dust rating. Several have the same pun ready for a second-generation model: the iPhone "Duover."

@johnyi0xSee it on YouTubeThe second-generation version should be called the iPhone Duover.
@roseoselinSee it on YouTubeIt still amazes me how thin these screens are. Like paper, but displaying a high definition image crisp and sharp. It's almost like magic.
@KleaversSee it on YouTubeAt this point, Apple should just send Jerry their new products before releasing and checking what breaks... ie EVERYTHING
@FoxphorousRonSee it on YouTubeIf the iPhone Duo Durability Test was the most anticipated Duo video, then this is the second most anticipated video on the Duo.
@JlipperSee it on YouTubeTheir AirPod case hinge is honestly more impressive than the duos!
