A 100-year-old hamburg tops Japan Eat's eight-upload week
A day after it went up, the newest video was already near 160,000 views, in a week that also took in Japanese Domino's, a shopping street and some very questionable names.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Why did Japan think this name was ok?
How old can a hamburger recipe get before it counts as history? Japan Eat's answer is a century: "This Japanese hamburg is 100 years old" went up at the very end of the week and is already gathering views faster than anything else on the channel, close to 160,000 in its first day. Hamburg steak, the Japanese take on a seasoned beef patty, is a staple of the country's yoshoku dishes that grew out of Western cooking, so a place serving it for a hundred years fits the channel's long habit of finding old and odd corners of Japan.
It was a busy week, with eight uploads in all. The most watched of them is "Why did Japan think this name was ok?", which is past 900,000 views, and names turned out to be a running theme: a few days later came "The restaurant with the worst (best) name in Japan." In between, the channel tried a restaurant with only eight reviews, asked whether a bowl of Japanese noodles was even real, and checked whether Domino's in Japan "has gone too far... maybe." That pizza video and the noodle one are still the busiest after the hamburg.
The longest-running series got its turn too, with episode 111 ranking every restaurant on what the title calls a legendary Japanese shopping street. It is the slowest of the new videos, perhaps because a full episode asks for more of an evening than a quick question about a name.
Among the cooking and food channels near Japan Eat in size, Fallow, Ian Fujimoto and Ballerina Farm are the ones running above their usual pace right now.
