"I had written the house off": GMA follows the Norte Fire into San Juan Capistrano

A resident whose home survived, a fire chief's account of crews staged in advance, and neighbors whose hoses ran dry shape ABC's two-minute report.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 109,459 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (4,129).

A San Juan Capistrano homeowner tells ABC News he had given up on his house. Then the firefighters arrived, and it was still standing. "I had written the house off," he says, before adding that "the firefighters did an amazing job."

His is one of several voices in Good Morning America's report on the wind-driven fires burning across Southern California. Jaclyn Lee follows the Norte Fire from San Clemente, where it forced nearly 16,000 people to evacuate, into San Juan Capistrano neighborhoods where homes were destroyed. A man in a respirator describes the flames covering the length of a football field or more every minute, pushed by fierce Santa Ana gusts. Another resident recalls neighbors fighting backyard flames together until their hoses ran dry: "I mean everybody's backyard was lighting up on fire."

"Despite our aggressive attack from land and the air, the wind was relentless," says T.J. McGovern, fire chief of the Orange County Fire Authority. Two firefighters were hurt, one treated for heat exhaustion, as air tankers dropped water and retardant. McGovern's other point is about timing: crews and aircraft had been staged a day ahead, so a large response was ready when the call came. "And I can tell you, that made a difference." The report closes with the Bryson Fire in Malibu and the Henderson Fire near San Diego, then Lee's live shot in front of charred ruins.

The Short has drawn more than 26 times GMA's usual first-day audience for its Shorts, and its comments came in far faster than usual. Someone who works in the area describes Friday's heat, smoke, wind and traffic; others argue over building materials and preparation, and one asks how crews could be in position before the fire began, the question McGovern answers on camera.

GMA's update on the deadly elementary school shooting in Bend, Oregon, also drew an unusually large audience the same morning, though the wildfire report reached more viewers.
