“Terrifying”: Ontario family’s Kia bursts into flames while parked in driveway as they slept

A commuter on the way to work spotted flames outside a home in Erin, Ontario, and stopped to bang on the door. Inside, the residents were asleep, unaware that a parked Kia Sportage was burning near the house, Global News reports.

Lauren Erickson recalls the warning: "He's saying 'Fire, fire, get out of the house right now! Fire, fire!'" Footage in Seán O'Shea's report shows the SUV engulfed in flames before firefighters extinguish the blaze.

According to the report, the 2020 Sportage had been parked for more than nine hours, and the fire began in the engine compartment. The vehicle belonged to Erickson's partner's mother.

O'Shea places the incident alongside previous fire recalls and litigation involving Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The cause of this fire, however, remains under investigation. Kia Canada says it takes the matter seriously and will investigate what happened.

The report drew about 99,000 views since yesterday. Its aftermath extends beyond the burned SUV: Erickson shows heat damage to her nearby Toyota, which she says her insurer has written off.

"Now both of our vehicles are no longer working," she says. Erickson wants Kia to take responsibility for the fire and its consequences.
