The clips channel's views were ordinary for a new short, but viewers wrote in about five times faster than usual, and many said the same thing about why they followed the team.

Sky Sports News is running at about three times its usual daily views as the football world takes in a busy news week. FutVibes, a clips channel built on short football edits, is having a quieter day than normal. One of its shorts, though, is busier where it counts: in the comments.

"Ronaldo retires from Portugal forever. 😥💔" went up on September 30. The title is the channel's own framing. The short drew about the number of views a FutVibes short usually gets on its first day, a little under half a million. The comments were different. Close to 700 arrived in the first 24 hours, roughly five times a usual first day.

What they say is strikingly similar. Viewer after viewer writes that Cristiano Ronaldo was the reason they followed Portugal at all. Some go further and say he is the reason they knew the country existed. Others trace their own football childhood back to him, or say he was the reason they started playing. A thread of complaint runs through it too, with several commenters calling his treatment disrespectful and pointing to a match they say he spent on the bench. And a few self-described Messi fans turned up to say he deserved a better ending.

That devotion has a long history behind it. Ronaldo is Portugal's all-time top scorer and most capped player, and he captained the side that won Euro 2016. FutVibes stayed on the subject the next day with a short on Portugal's first game after the retirement its title describes, and turned to the other half of football's long-running comparison with a clip about Argentina's new number 10.
