'Get him out': Craig Burley on Cristiano Ronaldo walking out of Portugal's camp
Four ESPN FC voices take on Ronaldo's exit, and much of the comment section wants to argue with one of them, Gab Marcotti.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 115,099 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (6,654).
‘GET HIM OUT!’ 👋 Burley sounds off on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal situation | ESPN FC
Cristiano Ronaldo walked out. According to the video's description, he decided to leave the Portugal camp, and ESPN UK put the ESPN FC panel on it straight away. The video passed 110,000 views in under a day. A new upload on this channel usually ends its first day with a few thousand.
The title gives Craig Burley the loudest line. The former Chelsea and Celtic midfielder has rarely softened an opinion on air, and his "Get him out" sets the tone. Host Dan Thomas also brings in Frank Leboeuf, Don Hutchison and Gab Marcotti, so the debate gets a French World Cup winner, two former Scotland internationals and a journalist who has covered Ronaldo's whole career.
The argument carried on underneath the video. Comments came in roughly five times faster than on a usual first day, and many of them answer Marcotti directly. The question viewers keep returning to is whether a coach owes Ronaldo a public apology for leaving him out. Others bring up Luis Suárez accepting a place on Uruguay's bench, and the Messi comparison is never far away.
It is the latest chapter in a short saga on the channel. As we reported here, the panel asked a few days ago whether Ronaldo's Portugal days were over, after his country beat Denmark without him. A shorter companion clip, "Burley says Ronaldo is FINISHED as Portugal's key man ❌", also started well ahead of the usual. Meanwhile the reaction to England's seven-goal night in Croatia and the talk of José Mourinho's three weeks before El Clásico drew far smaller crowds.
