'Suck it up': ESPN FC's panel asks whether Ronaldo's Portugal days are over

Portugal beat Denmark without their captain, and a debate on how his exit was handled opened at about twenty-five times ESPN UK's usual first day.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 163,023 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (6,324).

Portugal played Denmark in the Nations League without Cristiano Ronaldo, and won. He had left the camp after a falling-out with head coach Jorge Jesus, and the result handed ESPN FC a question it could not leave alone. Was this the end of his international career?

Kay Murray put it to Craig Burley, Shaka Hislop and Jan Aage Fjortoft. The title takes its blunt advice from the panel, that Ronaldo has to suck it up, and then asks the softer question underneath it: could Portugal have handled his exit better? The video passed 68,000 views in its first seven hours. A new ESPN UK upload usually draws around 6,000 in a whole day.

The comments moved even faster, already close to four times a usual full first day. Much of the thread sides with the coach for holding his line. Some viewers bring up Ronaldo's last months at Manchester United, and comparisons with Lionel Messi run all through it. Others wonder what Portugal might have done at the last World Cup had this moment come sooner.

It is the second day running that the channel's Ronaldo coverage has drawn a crowd, and a shorter clip, about his DNA not letting go of the national team, also ran well ahead of usual. The same evening brought the other half of ESPN UK's week. Real Madrid had a late winner ruled out in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Women's Champions League, and the highlights reel did more than ten times a usual first day. A separate short on the disallowed goal, in English and in Spanish, kept that argument going too.
