"Gucci was one of my original hens. I raised her from a little chick," Epic Gardening's host explains. After she died, he buried her in the garden and planted an Atlantic Giant pumpkin above her.
The Short, titled "I buried a chicken and grew a pumpkin...", follows that planting through to a harvest weighing about 74 pounds, the biggest pumpkin he has grown. It had drawn more than 415,000 views before half a day had passed, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day Shorts audience.
There is plenty of gardening work between the burial and the harvest. He adds bacterial and mycorrhizal inoculum to help the remains break down into plant nutrients, then gives the late-planted vine extra care. The expanding pumpkin gets sand on plywood beneath it and a little shade-cloth cabana overhead. Powdery mildew eventually stops its growth in late August.
For a gardener who says he has spent years trying and failing to grow giant vegetables, it is a personal best with a particular meaning. Viewers are sharing their own memories of planting trees above buried pets, including a willow whose cuttings became a living fence.
The pumpkin's destination brings the story back to Gucci's flock: he carves a jack-o'-lantern outline into it and lets the surviving chickens peck away.

i buried my laughing dove under our big plum tree in the garden so he can feed the tree and we can have plums that he made for us. next year the plums were the same as the previous year but i still felt like they were special
