Your Name, the Knicks and a shonen dream on Duolingo's channel

Two of the owl's four new shorts credit the animator @brerbo, and one of them borrows its hashtags from Makoto Shinkai's 2016 film.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"the knicks are cool but i wanna be a shonen mc 😔 #yourname #kiminonawa" is the newest short on Duolingo's channel, and the title alone tells you the tone: a language-learning app whose mascot would apparently rather be the hero of an anime than a basketball fan. The hashtags point to Your Name, Kimi no Na wa in Japanese, Makoto Shinkai's body-swap romance, and the animation is credited to @brerbo. Posted on September 29, it is the busiest of the week's four uploads right now, gathering views at about twice the pace of anything else on the channel.

@brerbo also drew "i wish i were a bird," posted the day before, which keeps a similar quieter, wistful register. The two shorts that opened the week are the bigger ones so far. "this lesson was ez," tagged to @Kaien-Nuen and @angelinazhqq, has passed 1.2 million views, and "i'm feeling TREMENDOUS 🤩 (spike is not 🌵)" crossed a million too, with a cactus joke that its title has to explain.

The channel also picked up subscribers at a lively clip, roughly ten thousand in a day, on its way toward seven million. Among the technology channels around it, Google Chrome and Fireship are having the big stretch, both well above their usual pace, while Apple is running quieter than normal. That leaves Duolingo as the app channel whose loudest voice this week belongs to an owl with anime dreams.
