Video taking off 33x its usual first day

New bodycam from the Virginia classroom where a first-grader shot Abby Zwerner

The footage shows the moments after the January 2023 shooting, and it drew more viewers in ten hours than the channel's Shorts usually reach in a day.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 281,899 views a day, 33 times a normal first day on this channel (8,584).

"Profane 1st-Grader Taunts Cops After Shooting Teacher" is a short clip of newly released police bodycam footage, posted by Criminally Obsessed. It goes back to January 2023, when a six-year-old boy shot and seriously wounded his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, in a Virginia classroom.

The footage covers the aftermath. Officers recover a handgun while another school employee holds the boy, who curses at the police and says he took the gun from his mother. In ten hours the clip passed 170,000 views. A Short on this channel usually ends its first day with fewer than ten thousand.

The description places the clip in the longer story. Zwerner was shot through the hand and chest and still got her students to safety. She has since had six surgeries and lives with permanent injuries. The boy was too young to be charged. His mother was sentenced to prison for federal firearms offenses and felony child neglect. In 2025 a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million in her civil case, and that verdict is under appeal.

The comment section moved far faster than the clip's views. More than 1,600 comments came in within those ten hours, compared with a usual first day of a few dozen. Much of the discussion is about the adults around the boy and how a gun ended up in a first-grade classroom.

The channel's other uploads that day continued its coverage of Christa Pike's failed execution in Tennessee, which we reported on here. One was an interview in which David Raybin, the lawyer who drafted the state's modern death penalty statute, calls what happened "almost inevitable." That video also ran well ahead of the channel's usual first day.
