A dozen House contests have moved in Democrats' direction in the Cook Political Report's revised ratings, according to CNN's midterm election coverage. The forecaster expects Democrats to win control of the chamber, though a shift toward the party does not mean every affected district now favors a Democratic victory.
Pennsylvania's 1st District illustrates the distinction. Republican incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick's contest against Democrat Bob Harvie is newly rated a toss-up, CNN reports. That puts it among the uncertain outcomes rather than in either party's column.
CNN's compilation moves between the House and Senate maps. Discussing the Senate contests, Cook editor Jessica Taylor says, "I would still rather be Democrats than Republicans right now in our seven toss-ups." Dana Bash emphasizes that those races can go either way, even though much of the competitive ground is Republican-held.
The House discussion includes districts previously won by Donald Trump. CNN commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin predicts a Democratic takeover, while Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Suzan DelBene presents her party's case for reclaiming the majority. Those are assessments ahead of voting, not election results.
The report drew about 967,000 views since yesterday. Its closing interview brings the forecast down to a district-level campaign: Harvie discusses inflation, heating-oil costs and his years teaching in public schools with John Berman.
