Kansas and Iowa were off Donald Trump's rally schedule. According to a separate CNN update today, they are back on for Sunday, adding a reversal to the cancellations examined in the network's fast-spreading report.
"What sources say about Trump's last-minute rally cancellations" drew about 724,000 views in its first six hours. Kaitlan Collins opens with the decision to drop the appearances in favor of a Florida rally and telephone events, before showing Trump's response to questions about the change.
"I don't feel I have to go to Kansas," Trump says in the footage. Asked about fatigue and travel, he attacks the Reuters reporter personally rather than offering a fuller explanation. The exchange does not establish why the events were canceled.
Kansas Republican Senator Roger Marshall offers a campaign explanation: "They think that I'm doing so well in the polls that he's probably got better places to spend his time." CNN then displays polling that places Democrat Adam Hamilton narrowly ahead, complicating that account without resolving the scheduling question.
The panels turn to whether a telephone appearance can do the work of an in-person rally. Former Trump campaign adviser Bryan Lanza emphasizes the need to campaign hard. Neera Tanden, a former Biden official, argues that Trump's approval ratings could make his presence unhelpful to vulnerable Republicans. Those are competing political assessments, not confirmed explanations for the cancellations.
In CNN's separate update, a White House official and a Republican official say the Kansas and Iowa rallies were rearranged to accommodate several telephone events. That report changes the practical takeaway: the visits discussed as canceled in this video are scheduled again.
