Avi Lewis and Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier push back on Bill C-39
On the same day, two Toronto bookstores greeting Anne Carson's Nobel Prize in Literature drew nearly as many viewers to a second Short.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 46,585 views a day, 167 times a normal first day on this channel (278).
NDP, labour, Indigenous leaders push back against Bill C-39
Canadians, says NDP Leader Avi Lewis, did not vote for a "wholesale rewriting" of how the country reviews major projects. That is the charge at the center of a short Canadian Press clip on Bill C-39, Prime Minister Mark Carney's overhaul of the project review process. It passed 25,000 views within nine hours. A typical Short here gets a few hundred on its whole first day.
Lewis is not the only voice in it. Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier of the Teme Augama Anishinabek nation says she is not against development, but she wants major changes so the government cannot step over inherent treaty rights. Labour leaders add their own objection: changes to the bill, they say, trample on the rights of workers. Three groups with different reasons arrive at the same demand.
It is the second political Short in two days to break out on the national news agency's channel, after the Conservatives' position on the MAID bill. This time, though, it had company from a very different corner of the news. Anne Carson's Nobel Prize in Literature sent the channel to two Toronto bookstores. At Type Books, manager Claire Foster built a shrine to the poet at the front of the shop as soon as she got to work. Rupert McNally of Ben McNally Books spent his morning ordering Carson titles to fill the shelves. That clip ran nearly as fast as the one from Ottawa.

The numbers
Two Shorts posted on the same day, one on a pipeline-and-permits fight in Parliament and one on a Nobel Prize, both left the channel's usual first day far behind.
