Three brothers, two of them formerly prominent luxury real estate brokers, have each been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for running a sex trafficking ring, CBS News reports. Oren, Alon and Tal Alexander were convicted in March of drugging and raping dozens of women over roughly a decade.
Oren and Alon are twins, and Tal is their older brother. Tal and Oren built careers selling high-end property in Miami and New York City. Alon worked as an executive at the family's private security company.
CBS News legal reporter Katrina Kaufman speaks from outside the New York courthouse. She says the sentencing hearing was dominated by victim impact statements. According to her report, 11 accusers spoke in court on Tuesday, and more than 70 women have come forward with abuse allegations. One woman's statement began: "I never imagined my first time in the Hamptons would become a nightmare." Another rejected the nickname the brothers once gave themselves, saying they "are not the A-Team" and "are not above the law." Kaufman reports that one woman walked out of the courtroom to applause from other victims after she finished speaking.
In addition to the prison terms, Kaufman says the brothers were ordered to pay restitution of $300,000 to $350,000 and will serve 10 years of supervised release. They denied drugging or raping anyone. The judge described them as "a lot like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," according to Kaufman, and told them: "Far from accepting responsibilities for your actions, you have blatantly denied it."
The CBS News report drew about 170,000 views in its first five hours.
