Pentagon’s plan to livestream execution sparks outrage
CBC News: The National is reporting on backlash facing U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over plans to livestream the execution of a former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people. The report has reached about 120,000 views, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for a Short.
The December execution would be the first carried out by a U.S. military firing squad since 1945, according to CBC's description. Its report focuses on the controversy over broadcasting it, rather than simply the announcement of an execution date.
The National also drew unusually large audiences for its Alberta referendum coverage. In an interview with Adrienne Arsenault, Premier Danielle Smith said that, as long as she remains premier, she would not pursue a second binding separation referendum if Albertans vote to stay in Canada. Separate Shorts about Hurricane Isaias and Donald Trump's Russian diesel deal also made strong starts. The execution livestream report appears in the full National broadcast alongside those stories.
