Video taking off 11x its usual first day

'Holy Sheets,' sung by Petco Park, sends Gavin Sheets' homer far past Bleacher Report's usual start

The Wild Card clip of San Diego chanting before a two-run shot against the Cubs drew about eleven times a normal first day, ahead of Nathan MacKinnon's opening-night fight.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 190,697 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (16,705).

A ballpark chanting a hitter's name, and the hitter answering on the next swing: that is all there is to Bleacher Report's newest baseball clip. It was enough. Fourteen hours after it went up, the video had nearly 150,000 views, on course for about eleven times what a new upload on the channel usually draws in its first day.

The moment comes from Game 2 of the National League Wild Card between the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs. The description sets the scene: the whole of Petco Park chanting "Holy Sheets" before Gavin Sheets drove a no-doubt two-run home run. The pun only works because of the name, and the crowd clearly knew it.

Sheets spent his first big-league seasons with the Chicago White Sox before moving to San Diego. Several commenters say they followed him from the South Side and are happy to see him land there. Others point out the towels in the stands that read "For the Faithful," and a few viewers who say they were in the building call it the highlight of a quieter night than Game 1. Fans of the Dodgers and the Brewers stop by to tip their caps to the atmosphere. Milwaukee comes up again and again, as commenters look ahead to where San Diego's October goes next.

The same day brought a hockey hit as well. Nathan MacKinnon dropping the gloves with the Los Angeles Kings' Brandt Clarke in the first game of the NHL season, then talking it through with Paul Bissonnette and the NHL on TNT crew, also ran far past the channel's usual start. On a channel that posts a steady stream of short highlights, it was a crowd in San Diego, singing a pun, that led the way.
