Big Water Guy's 'best travel hack' leaves viewers asking about the other side of the world
A sponsored short with no fish in it became the busiest video on the catch-and-cook channel, while the comments wander off to geography and tuna.
Why this story? The video is running at 270,814 views a day, 15 times its usual pace (17,894).
This is my best travel hack! #AD
Big Water Guy's channel is about catching, cooking and diving out of Washington, so the video doing most of the work right now is an unusual one. It is a sponsored short, marked as an ad in its own title, "This is my best travel hack! #AD", and it has no fish in it.
It also started slowly. Posted on September 30, it gathered only a few thousand views on its first day. Five days later it has passed 430,000, and it has lifted the whole channel's day to close to double its usual. Nothing he has posted since comes near it. "This blew my socks off", his strongest upload of the week, has fewer than half as many views.
The comment section is small, and much of it plays with one idea: being on the other side of the world. Several viewers ask the obvious question, the other side from where? A few others reply, with a straight face, that everyone is on the other side of the world from something. Another group seems to have looked straight past the travel tip. They want to know when the next upload is coming, and one asks specifically about the big tuna video.
The tuna has been on the menu all along. "Is my tuna ruined??" went up on October 3, and the next day brought "Shooting my dream fish!", which is closer to the catch, cook and dive the channel promises.
