Video taking off 1366x its usual first day

A yellow, a red and a referee's souvenirs for Messi's 'last game for Argentina'

The beIN SPORTS Australia Short is a joke that half its viewers needed a second look to get, and it arrived on the day the channel passed 250,000 subscribers.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 341,538 views a day, 1366 times a normal first day on this channel (250).

Messi gets a yellow and red card in his last game for Argentina!Messi gets a yellow and red card in his last game for Argentina!

"Messi gets a yellow and red card in his last game for Argentina!" reads like a bitter ending to one of football's great international careers. That is the joke. The Short comes from beIN SPORTS Australia, and its description says the referee simply would not let Lionel Messi leave without all the souvenirs. The tags point to a friendly against Benin.

The comment section shows how well the title does its job. Several viewers admit it took them a while to work out what they were watching. One says they had read about the cards elsewhere and assumed Messi had really been booked, before seeing it was a gesture. Others joke about how much those two cards became worth in a few seconds, or suggest the referee just wanted a part in the documentary. A few leave goodbyes with the date written underneath.

There is a neat echo in it, too. Messi's senior debut for Argentina, against Hungary in 2005, ended with a red card within minutes of his coming on as a substitute. Between that card and these two came two Copa América titles and the 2022 World Cup.

For this channel, a Short usually counts its first-day views in the hundreds. This one passed 340,000. It sat beside a run of Shanghai Masters tennis highlights, each still in the low hundreds, and on the same day beIN SPORTS Australia crossed 250,000 subscribers.
