HTTP Live Streaming gets its own day on Apple Developer's shelf
The IETF HLS Interest Day broadcast brought Apple engineers and the wider streaming community together for talks and a live Q&A.

IETF HLS Interest Day
Apple Developer put up a single video in the past seven days, and it was aimed squarely at the people who make video work: the "IETF HLS Interest Day," an online broadcast for engineers building with HTTP Live Streaming. The description promises presentations from Apple and other members of the HLS community, followed by a live Q&A with Apple engineers. It is the kind of upload that never trends and still matters, since HLS is the protocol behind a great deal of the streaming video people watch every day. It gathered close to 14,000 views in its first day.
The IETF in the title is the Internet Engineering Task Force, the standards body where HLS was written up as an open specification. A day like this one is a reminder that Apple's streaming format belongs to a much wider community than Apple itself.
The folding phone is still on the shelf too. A month after Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, "Design for iPhone Duo | Apple" keeps finding developers. It covers how controls move between poses, what belongs on the outer and inner displays, and something the chapters call "fold avoidance." Its companion, "Prepare your app for iPhone Duo | Apple," walks through size classes, asymmetric safe areas and simulating poses in Xcode.
The channel ran well above its usual daily pace and added about a thousand subscribers. Among the technology channels nearest its size, Microsoft Surface had the very big week, with Wes Roth also busy.
