Zoot Suit, La Bamba and El Teatro Campesino connect theater, film and Chicano cultural history in American Masters PBS's new Luis Valdez portrait. “American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez | Full Documentary | American Masters | PBS” has reached roughly 162,000 views since its October 7 arrival, making it the week's most-watched new upload and the channel's most active video right now.

The comments bring the work back to classrooms. One viewer is using the documentary for Chicano Studies; another remembers discovering Valdez and El Teatro Campesino in high school. Others are encountering the filmmaker and playwright for the first time. Alongside the feature, the channel posted a Short about “Los Vendidos,” Valdez's play examining assimilation and cultural identity.

American Masters added about 2,000 subscribers over the week, while its current daily viewing is slightly above its usual pace. Nearby, SBS Dateline is also having a busier-than-usual viewing day, while American Experience has had a substantial week despite a slower current pace.

Beyond Valdez, the Raúl Juliá documentary remains active, as does Mike Faist's Creative Spark interview about East of Eden. Faist's preparation ranges from painful boots to solitary weekends on the New Zealand set: another route into the practical work behind a performance.

  • Luis Valdez for me was and will always be the epitome of art and art expression in the MexAm community. I first knew about Luis and the Teatro Campesino back in high school and he was an inspiration for me. Thank you Mr Romero for teaching us about Luis and about what we could all be capable of achieving.
