Bay water floods Newport Beach homes and Balboa Fun Zone

ABC7's report shows residents sweeping water out of homes as city crews reinforce streets with sandbags.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 249,016 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (21,367).

ABC7 opens inside a home, where floodwater is being swept back out after the morning high tide. Outside, tidal markers are submerged and water covers streets and walkways around the Balboa Fun Zone.

The report makes an important distinction: earlier flooding that month came from large waves on the ocean side. This time, water rose from the bay, spilling into places normally beyond its reach.

Reporter Bianca Buono says the tide reached 8.3 feet, substantially higher than forecast. The city activated its Emergency Operations Center to identify flooded areas and coordinate sandbag distribution, Georgia Rios of the City of Newport Beach explains. Crews and heavy machinery appear in the streets, adding more bags after thousands had already been placed before the water arrived.

The Short drew an estimated quarter-million views in its first day, far beyond ABC7's usual start for that format. Its close-up view of flooded homes sits alongside aerial footage of cars and people making their way through the water.

ABC7 has since extended its coverage to flooding near Redondo Beach's King Harbor and a less visible consequence for drivers: saltwater damage. In a follow-up report, AAA and an automotive repair expert urge prompt inspections of exposed vehicles because corrosion and other damage can worsen over time.
