A two-dollar bucket and a pass-through ratchet: Lowe's budget tools for 731 Woodworks

Matt Outlaw's short about five cheap finds from the hardware aisle passed 390,000 views, and the comments are mostly haggling over the price of a tiny bucket.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"Lowe's Blew My Mind with These 5 Budget Tools" is a short tour of the cheap end of the hardware aisle, and on 731 Woodworks it became the week's most watched upload by a long way. Matt Outlaw, a tradesman since 1995 who now reviews tools full time, posted it on Monday. It began modestly, then kept climbing, and it was still the channel's busiest video seven days later, close to 400,000 views in.

The star turns out to be a mini bucket. Viewers argue about whether two dollars is too much for it, compare prices at Walmart, Menards and Home Depot, and swap uses: pencils on a desk, change in a cup holder, gift wrap that nobody throws away. The pass-through ratchet and a drill attachment with a 105-degree angle get their own fans, and one viewer points out that Kobalt has sold a pass-through set for years.

The long video of the week is the other one worth watching. "DeWALT REGRETS: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Buying!" runs about half an hour and goes through sanders, batteries, routers and track saws, with a chapter titled "DeWALT Battery Trap" and another arguing that the brand's best tools are corded. It had the strongest first day of the eleven uploads. A table saw billed as a threat to SawStop's hold on blade-stopping safety drew a quick first day as well.

The channel ran a little above its usual daily pace and added about 2,000 subscribers, leaving Outlaw under 50,000 short of a million. Among DIY and home channels near his size, eFIXX and Homeworthy had the busiest weeks, and 731 Woodworks came right after them.

What viewers say

  • I have one o' them mini-buckets on my desk right now. Mighty cute. Been keeping pencils and stuff in 'em. Might also be good to present small gifts in, to the right person, as we're making our slow way to the holidays.
  • Love that 105 degree angle. 90 can sometimes be an issue with the drill/driver hitting the workpiece.
  • I love those tiny buckets, I have an Ace Hardware one. Absolutely one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" ideas.
