New Sydney Airport Causes Chaos As Travellers Land At Wrong Location | 10 News
Ground staff celebrate on the tarmac, arriving passengers receive souvenirs, and Western Sydney International Airport welcomes its first international flight. But among the arrivals in 10 News' report is a traveler who expected to be on the other side of Australia.
"I saw Western Sydney. I thought it was Western Australia and I'm meant to be in Perth," he says.
Another passenger had expected Sydney's main airport. "We realised we were in the middle of nowhere," she says. These are different misunderstandings, and viewers are drawing that distinction in the comments: confusing Sydney's airports is not the same as confusing Western Sydney with Western Australia.
The report has drawn about 50,000 views in 20 hours, already far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for short uploads. Its comment section is also much busier than usual, with the destination mix-up dominating the discussion.
Reporter Hannah Stuart's story has more than a wrong-airport anecdote, though. An Air New Zealand aircraft marks the start of international operations, and Stuart outlines further airline arrivals, beginning with Singapore Airlines in November and followed by VietJet, Fiji Airways and Qatar Airways.
For a local traveler, the new location means precisely the opposite of being stranded far from the destination. Asked about getting home, the answer is simple: "Heaven. I'll be at home soon and having a cup of tea."
