Three charges became five. The man accused over the vehicle attack on federal MP Helen Haines outside her Wangaratta electorate office has now faced court, 10 News reports in a follow-up, and federal politicians have been briefed by Australia's security agencies. Haines remains in Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.
The charges first reached viewers through the October 20 edition of 10's Late News, presented by Ursula Heger. Police describe the attack as targeted. That bulletin passed 150,000 views in its first 16 hours, while the channel's longer uploads usually draw closer to 6,000 on their first day.
Abby Dinham's report from Wangaratta gives the town its own voice. Barber Ricky Jefferies, one of the people who stepped in, says: "I don't think I'm a hero, I think that I just was a person who had an opportunity to intervene..." Local state MP Tim McCurdy says that in a place like Wangaratta "you sort of think you're immune to this sort of stuff, but clearly we're not."
Outside the hospital, Rebeka Powell reports that Haines has had a leg amputated and is in a stable condition. Political editor Ashleigh Raper then turns to the ASIO chief's warnings about political violence, and independent MP Allegra Spender says every politician going back to Parliament next week needs "to think very hard about how we can behave better."
The rest of the half hour ranges widely: curfews in French cities after nights of riots, major job cuts at NAB, Pauline Hanson apologizing for a cartoon that mocked Senator Jacqui Lambie, Japan's spacecraft bound for the Martian moon Phobos, and two riders jousting on rental e-bikes in a London park.
A separate Short on a fatal hit-and-run involving a cyclist in Perth's south also started far beyond the channel's usual pace. And 10 News has since carried NSW regional MP Nichole Overall's account of receiving a threatening message on the same afternoon Haines was attacked; she says the viciousness aimed at politicians has escalated and that something has to be done.
